Property area in India
Flats are sold by carpet area in square feet. Under RERA, builders must state the carpet area, the usable floor area inside walls. Plot sizes are often quoted in square yards (gaj) in North India, cents in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and guntha in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana.

These traditional units are not included because their size varies from state to state and sometimes district to district. A bigha, for example, ranges from about 14,400 to over 27,000 sq ft. Check the local definition with your land records office.
