Hourly rate formula
Example
To take home ₹15 lakh a year with an estimated 15% tax, you need ₹17.65 lakh before tax. Add ₹2 lakh of expenses and a 10% buffer and the revenue target becomes ₹21.61 lakh. With 25 billable hours a week for 46 weeks (1,150 hours), your minimum rate is about ₹1,880 an hour, or about ₹15,040 a day.
Why freelancers under-price
- Counting 40 billable hours a week. Finding clients, admin and learning eat 30–50% of your time.
- Forgetting unpaid time off. There is no paid leave, sick leave or public holiday pay.
- Ignoring employer-paid benefits. As an employee, PF, gratuity, insurance and equipment were covered. Now they come out of your rate.
- Not planning for gaps. A buffer covers slow months and late payments.
Tax note for Indian freelancers
Professionals with receipts up to the prescribed limit can opt for presumptive taxation (Section 44ADA), under which 50% of receipts is treated as income. GST registration is needed once turnover crosses the threshold. Exports of services may be zero-rated. Check with a tax adviser for your case.
Frequently asked questions
Should I charge hourly or per project?
Hourly suits open-ended or advisory work. Fixed project pricing rewards efficiency and is often preferred by clients. Either way, start from this hourly number to check your quote covers your costs.
How do I convert my salary to a freelance rate?
A rough rule is to divide your annual CTC by 1,000 to 1,200 hours, not 2,080, because freelancers bill far fewer hours and pay their own overheads.
