Fuel cost formula
Example
A 350 km trip each way (700 km round trip) in a car that gives 15 km/l needs about 46.7 litres. At ₹100 a litre that is about ₹4,667, or ₹6.67 per km. Split between four friends, each pays about ₹1,167.
Tips for an accurate estimate
- Use your real-world mileage, not the ARAI figure in the brochure. City driving, air-conditioning and a full load can reduce it by 20–30%.
- Highway mileage is usually better than city mileage at steady speeds of 70–90 km/h.
- Petrol and diesel prices differ between states because of VAT. Use the price at your local pump.
- Remember tolls and parking. They are not included here.
Monthly commute cost
Enter your one-way office distance, tick round trip and set the number of trips to your working days (for example 22). The result is your monthly fuel spend, which is useful when comparing driving with public transport or an EV.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my car’s actual mileage?
Fill the tank fully and reset the trip meter. At the next full fill, divide the kilometres driven by the litres needed to refill.
Does this work for CNG and bikes?
Yes. For CNG, enter mileage in km/kg and the price per kg. For two-wheelers, enter the bike’s km/l.
