How electricity bills are calculated in India

Most state electricity boards and DISCOMs use telescopic slab tariffs for homes. Each block of units is charged at its own rate, and higher consumption falls into more expensive slabs. On top of the energy charge, bills usually include:

  • Fixed or demand charges based on your sanctioned load (kW), charged even if you use nothing.
  • Electricity duty or tax, set by the state government, usually a percentage of energy charges.
  • Fuel and power purchase adjustment surcharges, meter rent and other charges.
  • Subsidies that some states give for the first block of units.
Energy charges = Σ (units in each slab × slab rate) Bill = Energy charges + Fixed charge + Duty + Other charges − Subsidy

Example (using the sample tariff above)

350 units: 100 × ₹3 + 100 × ₹4.50 + 150 × ₹6.50 = ₹1,725 energy charges. Add a ₹100 fixed charge and 5% duty (₹86.25) and the bill is about ₹1,911. The sample rates are only an illustration, so enter your own state's tariff for a real estimate.

How to reduce your bill

  • Stay below a slab boundary: the last few units often cost the most.
  • Set ACs to 24–26°C and use 5-star rated appliances. A 1.5-ton AC can use 1–1.5 units an hour.
  • Switch to LED lighting and BLDC fans, which use far less power than older ones.
  • Consider rooftop solar. Net metering and central subsidies can cut the bill sharply.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my state’s tariff?

It is printed on your electricity bill and published on your DISCOM’s or state electricity regulatory commission’s website. Copy each slab’s upper limit and rate into the table.

What is one unit of electricity?

One unit is one kilowatt-hour (kWh): a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour, or a 100 W bulb running for 10 hours.

Why is my bill higher than the calculation?

Your bill may include fuel adjustment charges, arrears, late payment surcharges or a different fixed charge based on your sanctioned load. Add these under "Other charges".
